Cats Peeing Or Pooping Outside The Litter Box - 4 Steps To Stopping The Behavior

1) The first thing you should always do when your cat has stopped using the litter box to get them checked for a urinary tract infection. I do not care how healthy you think your kitty is, before you try any other way to solve your cat litter box problem - get your cat by a veterinarian and have a little furball checked out, because the IMS are the # 1 cause of litter box avoidance .

2) The next thing I would do, especially if your pet is wet / pooping on the bed or other furniture is to go out and get something to cover and protect the furniture, which will also discourage the cat from wanting to spend time on it.

Or:

large plastic drop cloth (very inexpensive - can be found at the hardware store or any store that sells paint supplies .)
equipped with a mattress cover, bed if your cat is urinating / pooping on. (More expensive, but a little better looking, less conspicuous .)
list of heavy vinyl (can be purchased from the fabric department at Wal-Mart)
or something similar. You can get creative with it. I think that one person mentioned they use the tablecloth!

The point is to protect furniture during training, and also discourages the cat from wanting to spend time there. (You can also use these suggestions to cover a specific spot on the floor or carpet, if that is where your cat is removed.)

Even if this does not discourage kitty from trying to potty on it - believe me, after a wet time of it and ended up standing in a puddle of his own urine, your cat will not do it again!

3) Keep the area covered when not in use, and whether the cat unsupervised access. This means that when you leave the house, it would shut the door or cover furniture / carpet / bed / etc

It would be wise to take one step further and cover other furniture, and even furniture that the cat is not used as a potty - just to be safe. Sometimes, just to solve the problem on its own, because the cat will not have another option besides a convenient small litter box.

Think about it. If there is no soft bed or couch to pee, and the only other option is the kitchen floor or something like that, it is almost certain to opt for a litter box.

Notwithstanding any other methods you use to retrain the cat, I would recommend doing this step because it will save your stuff and generally speed up the process at the same time.

4) Consider the quest for more absorbent litter. If you think about it, one reason the cat you want to wet the bed because of how quickly the urine is absorbed. Maybe your cat is upset by how slowly litter she / he absorbs urine.

If your cat's feet getting wet while urinating in the box, or their urine to splash back on them, obviously not a very pleasant situation. So, they are obliged to seek an alternative that is a little more neat and clean. (at least for them!) He May be a good idea to shop around for the litter that absorbs a lot quicker.

If you have a kitten, make sure the problem is not just the fact that the kitten can not get off to bed.
